Puppy Love/Three Ingredient Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuit

Running out of dog treats at our house is like running out of coffee–it just can’t happen. Jerry and Olivia are used to getting treats throughout the day, so when we run out and I have to communicate that to this face….

or tell this sweet baby that momma let her down….

…well, it just doesn’t fly. They like their treats. They get one when they get up, when they go out, when they come in, when they wake up from their nap, etc. Now, let me say they aren’t getting a full treat. I break them into little pieces and they don’t really know they aren’t getting the whole enchilada-they’re just excited about getting something. And did I mention that we have 2 treat jars? Olivia is getting on up there in age and she came to us missing some teeth, so we have a hard treat jar and a soft treat jar. Cookies, treats, biscuits, snacks–whatever you call them at your house, we have to have them at ours and here’s a way you never run out–make your own.

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuit

I’ve made a couple of dog treat recipes before and I just found this one online last week (at dogtreatkitchen.com) and I’ve already made 2 batches–one for my 4-legged babies and one for my best friend’s new little guy, Bo. These are super easy and the recipe only has 3 ingredients plus water!!

Peanut butter is the tie that binds in this and dogs love it, at least mine do. I had a couple of different cookies cutters so I gave those a try, but I also just rolled the dough into little balls, flattened it out, and bake them just like that. The pups don’t care about the shape, just the taste. Heck, that’s not even true-they just want to get a treat! But these do taste good–you can’t go wrong with flour, oatmeal, and peanut butter. If you want them to get nice and crunchy, leave them in the oven for a bit after they’ve finished baking. But if a softer texture is better for your pooch, take them out right when they’re done and let them cool on baking racks.

Either way, your dog is going to love them, you’ll save money by not buying all of the pricey store brands, you’ll know & control what ingredients go into your pet’s food, and your pups will never give you that poor pitiful look again. Right. 🙂

Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

3 ingredients (plus water) make a tasty and simple homemade treat for your furry best friend!

Ingredients

2 cups flour

1 cup rolled oats (not the quick cook kind)

1/3 cup chunky peanut butter

Instructions

  1. Mix together flour and oats in a large bowl.

  2. Add in peanut butter and 1 1/4 cups hot water. Blend well to a workable dough.

  3. Transfer dough to a floured surface to work and roll out. Add flour as needed to dough and to pin to help with any sticking.

  4. Roll out dough to about 1/4 inch thick.

  5. Put dough in the fridge to chill for about 30 minutes or more. You can leave it longer, but cover the dough with a sheet of parchment or wax paper to keep it from drying out.

  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  7. Remove dough, cut out dough with cutters and place shape onto lightly greased cookie sheet. Or if you don't have cutters, you can roll dough into small quarter-sized balls, flatten with hands, and lay onto lightly greased cookie sheet.

  8. Bake for about 35-40 minutes or until golden brown. When done, remove from cookie sheet and cool biscuits on wire racks. Or you can turn the oven off and leave the biscuits in the oven for awhile to get them nice and crunchy.

Nan's Notes:

  1. If your dog has wheat allergies, try substituting the flour for rice flour or another type of gluten-free flour. You can also use smooth peanut butter--we just happen to like the crunchy version.
